Creation and foundation of the University of Tebessa

University of Tebessa was founded under Executive Decree No. 09-08 of January 4th, 2009. The announcement of the promotion of the institution to the rank of university was the culmination of the considerable efforts made by all the university family members, over continuous years, which began in 1985, the year of the creation of the National Institutes of Higher Education in the disciplines of: Earth Sciences, Civil Engineering and Mining.

Tthe second step of the institution’s development was in 1992, when Sheikh Larbi Tebessi University Center, was created under Executive Decree No. 92/297 of September 27th, 1992. The University Center bore the name of the great scholar, famous son of the city of Tebessa, Sheikh Larbi Tebessi, in honor of the connotations of his name in terms of knowledge and constructive intellectual struggle.

By virtue of executive decree n ° 272/06 of August 16th, 2006 and as part of the new structuring of national university centers, the institution adopted the new structure of administrative services, institutes and departments.

The decisive step was on October 12th, 2008, when the President of the Republic announced, during the official opening ceremony of the 2008/2009 academic year, the promotion of Sheikh Larbi Tebessi University Center to the rank of University. This date is considered as a significant turning point to achieve the objectives set.

Nowadays, University of Tebessa has undergone major changes at the level of organizational and scientific structure, to showcase its scientific skills and material capabilities that allow it to compete with major universities and raise the educational and supervision level in various existing disciplines and branches.

El Chaikh Larbi Tebessi

      Larbi Tbessi, whose real name was Larbi Ferhati, born in 1891 in Cheria Tébessa Province, was a revolutionary and reformist Algerian, president of the Association of Algerian Muslim Ulema. He disappeared on April 4, 1957, during the war of Algeria, following his arrest at his Algiers home by civilians disguised paratroopers, the French military are still denying arresting or detaining him.
